SALEM, Va. –
Anna Giannopoulou's (Athens, Greece) season-high performance of 18 points and 11 rebounds wasn't enough as the Guilford women's basketball team fell to Roanoke College, 73-68, on Wednesday evening at the Cregger Center.
This battle marked the 64th meeting between the Quakers and the Maroons. With the win, the Maroons improved their overall record against the Quakers to 38-27. Guilford now drops to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the ODAC, while Roanoke snapped a three-game losing streak, improving to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Guilford was paced by Giannopoulou, who delivered a career-high 18 points on an efficient 7-9 shooting, grabbed 11 rebounds, and tallied three steals in 24 minutes. Her extended playing time has been a bright spot for the Quakers as she continues to gain confidence with each matchup.
Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.) contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals while shooting a near-perfect 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) added ten points, two assists, and one steal, while
Zoe Bayer (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) chipped in nine points, a game-high four steals, and three assists.
Leading the way for Roanoke was Nadia Snesarev, who notched a team-high 17 points, three rebounds, two assists, and four steals in 31 minutes of action. Freshman Paige Breuer added 16 points and two steals to bolster the Maroons' efforts. Ashley Fowler contributed 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Ingrid Moraes finished with ten points, three rebounds, and two steals.
Roanoke set the tone early, shooting 61.5% from the field in the first quarter and capitalizing on Guilford turnovers. Moraes and Fowler combined for eight quick points to give the Maroons an early advantage. Guilford kept pace with a balanced attack led by McMillan, who scored from the free-throw line; Scott, who added four points with a layup and a mid-range jumper; and Bayer, who scored on a pair of layups and a three-pointer. Despite Guilford's defensive efforts, Roanoke's efficiency allowed them to take a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Giannopoulou emerged as a key contributor, hitting a three-pointer to open the second quarter for Guilford.
Carleigh Perry (Faith, N.C.) followed with a three of her own, cutting the Quakers' deficit to one. Scott and
Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.) each drained a three-pointer to keep Guilford within striking distance. Despite their efforts, Roanoke maintained a slim 36-32 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw Guilford take control for a stretch. Scott opened the period with a three-pointer, and McMillan's defensive presence, paired with her scoring in the paint, gave the Quakers momentum. Bayer's fast-break layup helped Guilford secure a 39-38 lead midway through the quarter. Giannopoulou continued her dominance on the boards and added a smooth mid-range jumper. However, Roanoke responded with key baskets from Breuer and Snesarev, regaining momentum and ending the quarter tied at 54-54, setting up an exciting finish.
The fourth quarter was a thrilling back-and-forth affair. Although Guilford started slowly on offense, Giannopoulou opened the scoring with an and-one play, bringing the Quakers within three points.
Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) followed with a three-pointer, assisted by Perry. Giannopoulou scored on back-to-back possessions, keeping Guilford within one point, 66-67, with under a minute remaining. However, clutch free throws from Roanoke's Breuer, Snesarev, and Fowler in the final moments extended the Maroons' lead. Despite a late layup from McMillan to bring the score to 68-71, Roanoke sealed the game with two more free throws, escaping with a hard-fought 73-68 victory.
Guilford will hit the road once again to face nationally ranked No. 14 Washington and Lee University on Saturday, January 25. Tip-off is slated for 2 PM.
