Four Score Goals in Women’s Soccer’s One-Sided Victory

Campbell, Parker, and Robinson all record first goals with Guilford

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – With a dominant, all-around effort from the opening kick, the Guilford College women's soccer team maintained their ways of nonconference superiority with a quartet of goal scorers and a second-consecutive clean sheet, to roll North Carolina Wesleyan University, 4-0, on Wednesday evening at Scalf Field.

Their 19th straight favorable result against a foe outside of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), the Quakers have not lost outside of league play since 2021, pilling up 17 victories in that span, two of which have come this season in which they are now 2-0-0. For the Battling Bishops, the defeat in their home-opener drops them to 0-3-0.

Ady Franken (Peoria, Ill.) registered an identical line to that of her victory in net over the weekend, being asked to make just a single save on the three total shots against in the 19th shutout performance of her distinguished career, bringing her even with the program record in that category, as she improved to 2-0-0. It was quite the opposite for Olivia Dyjewski, as she was assaulted with 14 Quaker shot attempts, 12 of which were on target, and while she made eight stops, four goals slipped by as she fell to 0-3-0.

Naomi Campbell (Youngsville, N.C.), Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.), Jenna Shotton (Walnut Cove, N.C.), and Trinity Robinson (Burlington, N.C.) all scored goals for Guilford with Shotton adding a helper on the night. Outshooting the hosts on her own, Campbell attempted five shots on the evening, all of them on target. Samantha Dell took two of NCWU's three shots on the evening, and getting the lone look on frame. Nicole Yagi was the only other Bishop to get an attempt on the net.

The Quakers swiftly seized control of the tempo although the Battling Bishops got their first, and what ended up being their only, shot on goal less than 60 seconds into the contest. Over a third of the clock would transpire before the hosts got another look. In the interim, Campbell was in the process of peppering NCWU goalie Dyjewski with five shots, the fourth of which found paydirt. Controlled around the midfield circle on their offensive half, GC sent a clean through ball down the center of the pitch, that was redirected, albeit with loose touch, near the top of the 18 as Campbell recollected possession moving to her right, creating a clean shooting lane, beating the keeper with a rocket off the right foot back across her body into the left side of the goal around mid-height. Standing as Campbell's first score as a Quaker, the 32nd minute tally ended up being all GC needed, but they would add on.

Parker added another goal about eight minutes later, her first with Guilford, finding paydirt for the second time among Guilford's nine shot attempts in the first stanza, showing their control of the tempo by receiving eight corner kicks.

GC tacked on another score in the 74th minute. A chip towards the box that did allowed Shotton to get past the defender down the left side, but proved too far for her to beat Dyjewski to the spot. However, on a slide to secure the loose ball, in the upper-left corner of the 18, the Battling Bishops' keeper failed to maintain control, with the ball trickling just a couple of feet away, and Shotton was able to roll a shot into the back of the twine to make the score 3-0.

The Quakers put the finishing touches on the scoring in the 84th minute. A perfect through ball down the right side led Shotton on a clear run down the left wing once more, with her dash having all the looks of her score just ten minutes prior with Dyjewski coming off her line to try and cut off the chance. This time, however, Shotton played facilitator, centering the ball to a wide-open Robinson who shot the ball into the vacated net, notching her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to the final score of 4-0.

The women's soccer team is back in action at Appenzeller Field next, battling cross-town rival Greensboro College on Monday, September 9th. First kick is set for 7 PM.
