GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College women's tennis team hosted their first matchup at McMichael Centennial Class Courts on Wednesday afternoon, against Pfeiffer University, falling by a score of 5-2 against the Falcons.
Guilford receives their first loss of the season, moving to 1-1 on the season. Pfeiffer University improves to 2-1.
Guilford showcased some strong performances at the top of the box score, and fought hard throughout the matches.
The doubles competition proved to be a key factor in the outcome. The Quaker duo of
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) secured a victory over Megan Rekieta and Sydney Cohen, winning the match by a score of 7-5, in the top flight of doubles. However, Pfeiffer's doubles teams claimed victories in the remaining two matches, giving them an early lead.
In singles play, Belnap and Mendez both delivered impressive wins. The former defeated Haley Ingenito in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) in the top flight of singles. Mendez secured a straight-set victory in #2 singles, over Rekieta (6-2, 6-2). With this win, the freshman achieved her third -straight win in singles competitions. Unfortunately, the Quakers dropped the remaining matches, including a close three-set bout in the sixth flight, by
Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C) vs Kristen Colie , (7-6, 1-6, 4-7).
Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C),
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C), and
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N,C.), made appearances in their respective matches, with Nhouyanivsvong competing on court three, Sizemore on court four, and Salgado on court five.
The team looks to bounce back as they host in-state foe, Winston-Salem State University September 28. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
