GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dropping just a single game at the McMillian Courts, the Guilford College women's tennis team rolled past Division-II Winston-Salem State University, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Quakers improve to 2-1 in duals action this fall. Playing their first match of the season, WSSU falls to 0-1.
Surging in front, GC grabbed the first point by taking all three matches in doubles. In the top matchup, they needed an extra point, but
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Erika Mendez (Asheville, N.C.) slipped past Semmie Moore and Iyana Nickens, 7-5. In #2 doubles,
Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) bested Brooke Higgins and Kyla Burns, 6-4.
Amy Soto Salgado (Conover, N.C.) and
LaNiya Ward (Pittsburgh, Pa.) completed the sweep in the third flight over Briana Drew and Dezirae Black-Macon, 6-2.
Building on the momentum they built in doubles action, Guilford claimed all but one point in singles. Belnap did drop the top flight in a long one to Moore, 6-7, 6-1, 13-11. It was all GC, however, the rest of the way down the box score. Mendez permitted Higgins just a single point in the #2 matchup, winning 6-0, 6-1. Nhouyvanisvong beat Burns in #3 singles, 6-2, 6-3. In the #4 matchup, Sizemore took care of Nickens, 6-2, 6-1. Soto Salgado claimed the fifth flight win, 7-5, 6-0 over Drew. Finally, in the #6 matchup,
Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C.) defeated Black-Macon, 6-4, 6-0.
The women's tennis team competes in their second tournament of the fall next, traveling to play in the Methodist Tournament, hosted by Methodist University next weekend. Action for the three-day event begins on Friday.
