WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Guilford College women's tennis team traveled to the Bert Lain Tennis Center on Sunday to continue their fall slate against an in-state foe, Salem College, securing a decisive 5-2 victory over the Spirits.
Guilford secured their first victory, moving to 1-0 on the season. Salem College falls to 0-1.
Guilford showcased their strength in both singles and doubles competition, with multiple players contributing to the team's success.
Erika Mendez continued her impressive start on court two, defeating Mariana Faint in straight sets (6-2, 6-0). Chandler Sizemore (Sandy Ridge, N.C) secured her first collegiate singles win with no trouble in #4 singles, winning in straight sets with a score of (6-0, 6-1). Amy Soto Salgado joined Sizemore as she earned her first collegiate singles victory as well, delivering a dominant performance in the fifth flight, with a score of (6-2, 6-1). Bethany Lupo (Tabor City, N.C) wrapped up the singles slate for the Quakers in style, sailing past the competition on court six, with a score of (6-0, 6-2).
Ashley Belnap (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Jolie Nhouyvanisvong (Greensboro, N.C) made appearances in their respective matches, with Belnap competing on court one and Nhouyvanisvong on court three.
Guilford completed a sweep in the doubles competition. Belnap and Menedez clinched a hard-fought victory in the top flight of doubles over Adley Keim and Cymone Crump, winning the match in a tiebreaker. Nhouyvanisvong and Sizemore secured a shutout win on court two over Daisy Ortiz Mendoza and Samantha Smiley. Salgado and Ward dished out the final knockout blow with a convincing victory in #3 doubles over Jessea James and Chloe Koons (6-1).
The team seeks to build on this momentum heading into their first home matchup of the season as the Quakers host Pfeiffer University on September 25. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
