No. 10 Emory Issues Women’s Soccer’s First Defeat of Season

Eagles pull away late to blank GC in Sunday showdown

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In their top test of the season thus far, the Guilford College women's soccer team fell to the No. 10 Nationally Ranked Emory College, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Appenzeller Field.

With the defeat, the Quakers fall to 4-1-0 on the season. The Eagles, on the other hand, improve to the identical mark of 4-1-0.

Ady Franken (Peoria, Ill.) got the start in goal once more for Guilford, and permitted a ball to get past her for the first time of the season, finishing with three tallies allowed against a baker's dozen saves on the 23 total shots she faced to fall to 4-1-0. Emory's Sophia Garcia improved to 4-1-0 making one save out of the four shots she faced.

Kaitlyn Nimmer, Madison Teng, and Emory Bozzuti each found the twine for the visitors, with Claudia Schmidt and Zia Tomlin distributing assists. Nimmer's tally was the game-winner. Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.) got the only shot on frame for the hosts.

Dominating the possession and the scoring opportunities in the early going, the guests took the lead in the 21st minute. A misplay in the box by a Quaker defender in which, on an attempted settle, the slick ball slipped under her cleat and found the feet of Nimmer. Controlling at the top of the 18' straight away, she moved to her left, got a step on the defender and shot the ball back across her body with her left foot, and just beating Franken into the lower-right corner for GC's first goal allowed on the year.

As the sun emerged from behind the clouds, and the turf began to dry, Guilford was able to see more success with their build-up attempts as the final moments of the half expired, and while they built momentum entering the second half of play, they were still trailing in several key statistics. Emory outshot the Quakers 9-3 with eight of their looks threatening the twine. They were also the recipients of all six corners in the first half of play.

Early in the second half, Guilford maintained some momentum, but Emory regained control of the game. In a brilliant moment Franken kept the game at bay with a superb stop in the 48th minute. Off a throw in, the Eagles sent a feed into the box that the Quakers keeper attacked to potentially make a play on. Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) got her head on it but it found EU's Nimmer again. She got a great look on a vacated net, but the recovering Franken was able to slide and throw her foot behind her, to deflect the ball away before a second-chance shot hit the crossbar of the football field goal post.

Emory ultimately pulled away late with Teng and Bozzuti adding insurance within 180 seconds of each other in the 74th and 76th minutes respectively, extending the final score to 3-0.

The Quakers look to get back to their winning ways when they venture to Fayetteville to clash with Methodist on Wednesday. First kick is set for 7 PM.
