GREENSBORO, N.C. -- With a sweep the day prior, the men's tennis squad looked to snap their losing streak versus visiting Averett on Sunday afternoon. Despite a strong showing from
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), the Quakers were bested 7-2.
Guilford sits fifth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with a 5-3 conference record, 8-7 overall. Averett climbs above their counterparts into fourth, 6-7 overall and 5-2 against the same opponents.
Outside of a mid-match retirement versus Pfeiffer, Mercedes has won six of his past seven singles matches, including five in a row with a win against Cougar opponent Alex Donnelly, 6-2, 6-0. Also picking up the team's second point of the day, he and partner Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) defeated Donnelly and Prabjeet Chandhok at no. 1 doubles, 8-4. With the win, the duo has won five out of their past six matches together.
Like the women's squad, Guilford next heads to Virginia Beach for their last regular season bout, facing off against Virginia Wesleyan next Saturday, April 20. Start time is set for 2:00 pm.
