BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Traveling two and a half hours north to Buena Vista, VA., the Quakers took on Southern Virginia University in an afternoon double-header at Harvey-Dryden Field. GC proved dominant in the first game, recording a massive 14-0 victory, but fell just barely in their second contest, 8-7.
This result brings the Quakers to a record of 7-5. For the Knights, they have now recorded their first win of the season, 1-5.
Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) was the star pitcher of game one, throwing for all seven innings. This brings her record to 3-1, as she only allowed six hits, caused three strikeouts, and no runs were recorded on her watch.
The first of the doubleheader went in favor of the Quakers, scoring 14 runs, not allowing their opponent a chance on the board.
For game two, Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) played the whole contest but ended with the pitching loss, 3-2. She allowed eight hits, eight runs, but caused five strikeouts.
The offense squad in the second contest was tight knit, but not enough to walk away with a double win. The Quakers were bested by just one point, 8-7.
GAME 1
GC's offense was on fire for game one, with two players, Alli Clemons (Cocoa, Fla.) and
Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) each bringing home three runs.
Faith Fennel (Buena Park, Calif.) and
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) recorded two runs each, greatly contributing to GC's victory.
If you thought Guilford had a big enough lead after the sixth inning with seven runs, you'd be wrong. In just the seventh inning alone, the Quakers scored seven runs, doubling their score to 14. The remainder of scorers fell into this innings, tallying up a run from Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.),
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.),
Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.), and
Emma Patterson (Mocksville, N.C.).
GAME 2
The first inning opened with a run for Guilford, due to Johnson grounding out a hit to the shortstop, resulting in Stoner making it home. However, things took a turn in the second inning, GC unable to get a run, but SVU tallying four on the board.
Feeling the pressure, Guilford had a pretty successful third inning, scoring four. Fennel ran home due to an error by the Knights' third baseman. A few batters later, Gray doubled down the left field line resulting in a triple run, bringing home Calus, Stoner, and Lancos. Still down, this brought the score to 7-5.
The next three innings were quiet for both squads, leaving Guilford just the seventh inning for a chance to turn things around. Top of the seventh, Guilford scored two runs. Ragan Bethea (Hamer, S.C.) doubled to left field, bringing Patterson and Stoner home. This tied the game at seven, still giving the Kights a chance to claim victory. That is exactly what happened, SVU recorded one run and secured the win, 8-7.
The Quakers remain on the road for their final two matches of an eight contest away trek. They are to play North Carolina Wesleyan University at Edge Field in Rocky Mountain, N.C. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. & 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13.
