Doubles Advantage Paves Way In Bounceback Win for Men’s Tennis

Quakers got valuable support from singles depth

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After suffering a blow at the hands of Pfeiffer yesterday afternoon, the men's tennis squad had to quickly turn around for a home conference bout against Hampden-Sydney. The Quakers proved to have just enough gas in the tank, outlasting the Tigers in singles to win a nailbiter, 5-4.

The win propels Guilford to a winning record at 6-5, and a 3-1 mark in conference play. Hampden-Sydney drops to 5-9, but maintains a positive conference record of 3-1, also.

Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was the lone Quaker to achieve two points for his squad, but they were as valuable as ever. He won with partner Brandon Hermes (West Hartford, Conn.) at the no. 1 doubles slot by the 8-3 scoreline, then proceeded to dominate his singles opponent, dropping only one game.

Looking to take their momentum into a new month, Guilford heads upstate for an ODAC meetup with Bridgewater. Start time on Saturday, April 6 is set for 1:00 p.m.
