GREENSBORO N.C. - Today Guilford College was to "bleed crimson" at Haworth Field against their crosstown rivals of Greensboro College. This goal did not come to be as the Pride bested the Quakers in not one, but both games this afternoon, 10-7 and 14-4.
After today's result, Guilford's record falls to 8-8. For Greensboro College, they improved to an 11-7 record.
In game one,
Alexis Lester (Elkin, N.C.) took the pitching loss, putting her record at 0-2. She tossed 2.2 innings, but allowed four hits, four runs, two of which were earned.
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) also allowed four runs, all of which were earned, but she overall had the most gametime at 4.4 innings. Lastly,
Morgan Kinney (Browns Summit, N.C.) pitched for 1.1 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, and two walks.
The GC offense was successful but not enough to best their competition. Five of Guilford's seven runs were brought home due to the bat of
Alli Clemens (Cocoa, Fla.). Two of the five were achieved by
Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.).
For the second contest, Guilford had a roster of pitchers, all from the first game, with the addition of
Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) who also unfortunately got the pitching loss. Her record falls to 3-3. Northern pitched two innings, allowed for ten hits, six runs, all of which were earned. She struck out one and faced 18 batters.
Guilford's offense fell short in game two. Stoner made it home for two of GC's four runs but this was not enough to comeback from Greensboro's early advantage.
GAME 1
The first game of the doubleheader was filled with some impressive plays for the Guilford offense. Greensboro opened the game with two runs in the first inning, followed by one for Guilford. Gray tripled down the right field line, bringing home Stoner. After, the Pride snagged one more tally in the second inning, making the score 3-1. In the third, GC gets one more run, again with Gray up to bat, singling down the right field line to bring home Stoner in similar fashion to the first inning.
Down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth frame, Guilford then proceeded to load the bases. Clemens got a hold of a pitch, slashing the ball out of the confines of Haworth Field, en route to four RBI, and put the Quakers in the lead, 6-4.
In the sixth inning, Greensboro got one run, tying up the contest. The Pride rode that momentum into a late-game lead, taking the one-run advantage in the top of the seventh. Clemens was up to the task once more with the game seemingly over. With no runners on base this time, she hit a solo homer, enough to keep the Quakers in the game and into extra innings. The eighth and eventual last inning was unsuccessful for the Quakers, going scoreless, as their competition racked up three runs, claiming victory 10-7.
GAME 2
The second contest was unsuccessful throughout, the Quakers getting bested by ten runs. The game started tied at two in the first inning after
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) singled up the middle, bringing home both Stoner and
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.). The Quaker offense was not up to par, allowing the Pride to bring home four runs in the second inning and three runs in both the fourth and seventh. Despite Clemens' sacrifice fly to right field to get Stoner home in the third and
Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) getting a run in the fifth, the Pride had too much of an advantage.
The Quakers remain at home for their next doubleheader for their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener against Eastern Mennonite University. It will be Mental Health Awareness Day at Haworth Field for this matchup on Saturday, March 23. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
