GREENSBORO, N.C. – Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) posted the first four-point performance of her career but the Guilford College women's lacrosse team dropped a tight one to Pfeiffer University, 14-10, at N.E. Lefko Field on Tuesday evening.
With the loss the Quakers drop to 1-3 on the season while the Falcons grab their first win of the season and advance to 1-3.
Zenna Carson (Blacksburg, Va.) was busy in goal stopping nine of the 20 shots she faced during her time in the crease. She dropped to 1-3 in goal on the season.
Sam Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) also spent some time in the cage allowing three goals against two saves. Jordan Pendergraff went the distance for the hosts making just six saves against ten goals allowed, but she did enough to get the win and improve to 1-3.
Gravely finished the contest with three goals and an assist for the Quakers, good for her third-straight three-plus point showing.
Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine) was superb as always, scoring three goals while assisting three others in addition to a game-high eight caused turnovers and a team-best six ground balls.
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) had a goal and an assist while
Maggie Bryson (Kernersville, N.C.) scored twice and collected four draw controls.
Guilford had no answer for Julia Barbato who scored half of Pfeiffer's goals on the night while assisting two more along with a game-high seven ground balls and six draw controls. Analise Robinson contributed four goals and a game-high eight draw controls.
The Falcons jumped on the board immediately as Barbato corralled the opening draw and went straight down the field to score the first of her seven goals just 12 seconds in. Things calmed down from there, however. Robinson gave the hosts a two-goal edge six minutes later followed by a Bryson counter soon after. Barbato closed the quarter's scoring with a second tally and it was 3-1 after one.
Guilford took advantage on some special teams opportunities in the second. First Bryson got a man-up tally, then Gravley did with Garland assisting on both to even things at three. Robinson's second goal and
Kylie Horn's (Fairfax, Va.) lone tally occurred within 30 seconds of each other before neither team scored over the final seven minutes to enter the break at four-all.
The third period was a wild one with the adversaries combining for nine goals over the 15 minutes, more than they scored across the entire first 30. Robinson opened the scoring before Barbato took over scoring three of the Falcons next four goals. She was not unopposed as Hartnett, Gravley, and Garland all scored for Guilford but when the dust settled after a Cerys Reid goal with 21 seconds remaining, the Falcons led 10-7.
The Quakers tried to get back in it with Harnett scoring twice and Gravley netting her third. Ultimately Barbato held them at bay, however, with two tallies of her own before Skyla Jo Charette, with Barbato on the distributing side this time, put things away and brought the final score to 14-10.
Guilford continues their long stretch of road contests when they visit Brevard on Friday, March 1 at 1:00 PM.
