Quakers Bested in Final Regular Season Contest

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford College women's basketball team faced off against Shenandoah University at the Ragan-Brown Field House for their last regular season match of the year on Saturday evening. After a tough fight, the Quakers were bested, 73-65.

The game opened in favor of the Quakers (18-6, 13-5), with Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) and Ashtyn Zeigler (Mooresville, N.C.) both achieving baskets from behind the arc. Mid-quarter, the Hornets (19-6, 14-4) went on an 8-0 run, however, followed by a 7-0 streak from the Quakers to close the first. GC did not allow their competition double-digits and overall led 13-9.

The second quarter was where GC lost their advantage. Only able to score eight points, the Hornets doubled that total, grasping the lead, 27-22.

The entire second half of the game was intense for both squads. The Hornets began the half by tallying ten-straight on the board, eventually extending their advantage to as much as 18. Three-pointers by Giannopoulou and Courtney McMillan (Lexington, N.C.), sparked a run getting the game within striking distance, reducing their margin to six, still trailing, 47-41 at the end of the third.

The fourth period was again a fight for every point. The Quakers were playing catch up with every possession. 6:01 on the clock, Zoe Bayer (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) added three points to GC's score, en route to a promising 12-2 run for the Quakers. It turned out to be too little, too late, as the Hornets did enough down the stretch to hold off the Quakers and win, 73-65.

Giannopoulou led all players with 20 points. McMillan followed closely behind with shooting 7-11 in field goals, while leading the team with seven rebounds, and achieved four steals.

Despite the result of this contest, the Quakers will still advance with the opportunity to play in the ODAC tournament in Salem, Va. Guilford, seeded fifth, will take part in a battle against fourth-seeded Bridgewater College on Friday, February 23, at Salem Civic Center. Tip-off for the ODAC Quarterfinal game is to begin at 3:00 p.m.
