Men’s Basketball Drops First Away Game of New Year

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The sixth-ranked Quakers returned to action for the first time in a week, traveling to Virginia Wesleyan for their last away contest of the regular season. The Quakers struggled offensively throughout the game, and dropped a six-pointer to the Marlins, 68-62.

In a low-scoring first half, Virginia Wesleyan (17-6, 8-6) led 16-8 through the first ten minutes of play. Guilford (20-3, 11-3) promptly replied with a 12-1 run, in large part to Julius Burch. The graduate forward converted an and-one, scoring seven total points to put the visitors in the lead with 6:16 remaining (20-16).

After the Marlins brought the game to within a point (20-19) a minute later, both squads traded baskets down the stretch and the Quakers held a five-point lead headed into the locker rooms (31-26).

The second half was deadlocked, neither team able to gain a sizable advantage, and with 7:55 left, GC and VWU were tied at 48. The Marlins stayed hot from beyond the arc, en route to a seven-point lead (59-52) with under three minutes left.

The Quakers found a late spark in the thirty seconds, with Gabe Proctor drawing a shooting foul from beyond the arc. Three consecutive free-throws brought Virginia Wesleyan's lead to just four (66-62), but the deficit was too large to overcome, as Guilford dropped just their third game all season, 68-62.

Tyler Dearman led the Quakers in scoring with 16 points, to go along with three steals. Gabe Proctor scored 14 off the bench, and brother Luke Proctor scored 10. Burch recorded 11 rebounds.

GC returns back to Ragan-Brown for their last two contests of the regular season. Roanoke comes to Greensboro on Wednesday, February 14, and tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
