FERRUM, VA - Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) finished with 19.5 points at a .222 clip and a season-high in kills,
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) with 17.5 points with a .237 hitting percentage, and
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, P.R.) with 15.0 points paired with eight digs, brought the house down as the Guilford College volleyball team defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College in a Senior Night-comeback win, 3-2 (21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 15-13) in the Swartz Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Quakers finish the regular season with a record of 13-12, 7-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) while the Panthers finish their season at 7-17, 2-10 in the ODAC. Because GC won, it locks Guilford in the number five seed in the big dance by way of the head-to-head tiebreaker with Randolph-Macon. The Quakers will have a chance at revenge in the rematch against the University of Lynchburg in the first round of the tournament as Guilford just recently fell to the Hornets on November 1st.
Star pupils for Guilford included Moore with double-double performance of 17 kills paired with 14 digs, right behind her was
Kaci Johnson with 16 kills, and Alcantara garnering 15 kills.
Madison Bozarth (Greensboro, N.C.) was the head honcho for the Quaker defense as she earned her career-high and game-high in digs with 28.
Statistical leaders for the Panthers squad were Bailey Terry with a baker's dozen in kills, a solid performance from Harleigh Propst with second-highest in kills for Ferrum with nine, 20 assists, and 12 digs, and Kenzee Chaffin with team-high 23 assists. Avery Tucker controlled the home team's defense with 16 digs as well.
Guilford came out swinging with a 6-1 run thanks to kills from Moore, her first of four in this set, Page, and
Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) alongside Panther blunders. Ferrum then delivered nine uninterrupted points as a rebuttal due to FC benefiting from GC's slip-ups paired with Tucker and Chaffin kills. Moore, Alcantara, and
Vanessa Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.), who ended with six kills, three blocks, and 7.5 points, soon ignited the back-and-forth battle with kills. Three of the next four points came from Terry to make it 17-12 in favor of the home team.
Vanessa Johnson,
Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.), and Moore made valiant efforts to keep the Quakers alive, however, Carsyn Diggs, who finished with 15 digs and eight kills, contributed to the Panthers' score late as well as Sami Kircher to secure the set win, 25-21.
Set two was where
Kaci Johnson and Moore came alive as they had a combined total of 11 kills. Guilford was on the right track as they scored three-consecutive points, but Ferrum returned the favor with a 7-1 advancement. Two straight kills came from
Kaci Johnson followed by an ace from Bozarth.
Kaci Johnson made her presence known with another kill alongside Moore's third of the set to make it 10 all. Alcantara was also added to the mix in the Quaker offense. A 6-1 stretch was made by Ferrum due to Propst, Chaffin, and Terry. Attacking errors and Moore kills attempted to halt FC's run, but the Panthers walked away with another set win of 26-24.
It was evenly matched at the start of set three with the score of 5-4 in favor of the Panthers. Moore earned her first of four kills in this set to start things off for GC along with FC errors. Soon enough, Guilford scored seven in a row, four of which were from Alcantara. She would then end this set with six. While she was in the zone,
Kaci Johnson added a kill of her own alongside a pair of aces from Bozarth. Kills from Page and Moore pushed the score to 20-13. This was Ferrum's worst set when it came to errors as they left with six. None other than Moore ended the set with a win, 25-19.
The Quakers began full throttle with a 7-1 lead thanks to kills from
Kaci Johnson, an ace from Page, and two-consecutive aces from Moore.
Kaci Johnson then added two more kills before the 3-0 stretch due to a kill from Alcantara, her first of four in set four, and two straight aces from
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) to rub salt in the wound.
Vanessa Johnson adds her two cents followed by an ace from
Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.). Moore,
Vanessa Johnson, and Alcantara aggravated the issue to make it 20-14. Sarabeth Johnson, combined with a series of Guilford errors, sparked a 3-0 run for the Panthers. However, an ace from Cavataio—who finished the night with a team-high four aces—along with key plays from Alcantara and Moore, sealed the set victory with a 25-19 score.
Set five opened with strong plays from Propst and Terry, but Guilford responded with a 5-2 run, tying the score at five—four of those points credited to
Kaci Johnson. The set was dominated by
Kaci Johnson, who tallied five kills in this decisive stretch. A 4-1 Quaker-extension was all thanks to Alcantara, Moore, and an ace from Cavataio.
Marie Hall (High Point, N.C.) joined the fun with a kill alongside contributions from
Vanessa Johnson to make it 13-9. Terry and Diggs attempted to regain control, but who else but
Kaci Johnson to come in and ensure the set win 15-13 and a final match score of 3-2 to finalize the win.
As stated before, the Quakers have punched their ticket to the ODAC tournament and will battle against fourth seed Lynchburg on Tuesday, November 12 in the Quarterfinals. Time and location are yet to be determined.
