BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Guilford College men's soccer team traveled to the Bridgewater Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon, facing Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Bridgewater College, falling in a one-sided contest by a score of 5-1.
The Quakers were unable to bounce back in today's match up, dropping to 3-7-0, on the season and 0-4-0 in ODAC play. The Eagles improved to 6-2-3, and 2-1-0 in conference play, fourth in the ODAC.
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) got the start in goal for Guilford, securing ten saves amongst the 16 he faced, falling to 2-6-0 in net.
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) closed the game out for the Quakers in the final 15 minutes of game time. Charles Schweinefuss made the start in net for the home team, improving to 6-2-3 for Bridgewater, making one save among the two shot attempts he faced.
Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.) was the sole scorer for the Quakers. GC had eight total shots, with two on target, both of them off the foot of Vasquez.
Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.) also contributed two shots.
Jake Carter (Madison, N.C.) and
Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla) registered one each.
The Quakers started off on a rough note with an offside inside of about 60 seconds of game time and a shot opportunity by Santos, which missed the frame, one of five opportunities GC took in the first half.
Despite the early efforts by the Quakers, The Eagles were able to find the back of the net, off a Riley Queen shot, assisted by Ali Malik in the eighth minute of game play.
Unfortunately, luck was not on Guilford's side, as a penalty was given to Bridgewater three minutes after the first goal, resulting in a second tally, scored by Zach Jarvis.
In the 19th minute, Bridgewater had a play on the left side of the 18', off a through ball, resulting in a one-on-one with Kelley. Kelley stood strong and stretched out to make an incredible save. Quickly recovering, Kelley returned to a standing position making another incredible save off the rebound preventing an early 3-nil lead by the Eagles.
Minutes after the incredible showing by Kelley, Guilford earned their first corner kick of the match. Hercules sent a cross in, hoping for a Quaker to connect on the attempt, but all heads were missed as the Eagles attempted to clear it. As the ball bounced off the clearance on the opposite side of the 18', Vasquez connected his laces to the ball, scoring an incredible volley that saw the ball hit the upper-90, leaving no chance for the keeper to react, making the score 2-1.
Moments later, the Eagles responded with another tally, from Tre Widrick, assisted by Ali Malik, resulting in GC going down two again, leading to an uphill battle for the rest of the match.
The second half was short of excitement for the Quakers as they only had two opportunities on goal and conceded the final two scores of the match in the 50' and the 61', ending the afternoon on a score of 5-1.
Guilford looks to break their losing streak as they return home to host conference foe Roanoke College on Wednesday, October 9. Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M.
