GREENSBORO, N.C. - Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, P.R.) earned 11.0 points,
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) and
Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) were X-factors in set three, and
Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.) made some noise in her season debut with 9.5 points as the Guilford College volleyball team was victorious over Eastern Mennonite University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) on Friday night on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
Star players for the Quakers were Alcantara who led the way with 11 kills, while Johnson and Moore each dominated with seven kills. Duvall also made an impact as a starter, finishing the day with seven kills.
Key factors for the Royals included Mara Woolford who ended the night with eight kills, Kaitlyn Custis dishing out 13 assists, and Anna Black who had the game-high for digs at ten.
GC had a slow start against EMU, falling behind 10-2 due to contributions from Madison Stockner, Sophia Denby, Kenley Smith, and a series of attacking errors, along with three consecutive service aces. Back-to-back kills from Moore got the Quakers going paired with an ace from Duvall. A
Kaci Johnson kill alongside two consecutive service aces from
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)—who had team-high nine digs and three assists—knocked the Royals on their heels to create a 5-0 run.
Vanessa Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Alcantara were to thank in order for the Quakers to take the lead for the first time in the match. Woolford and Kassidy Meadows attempted to cool down GC, but Guilford responded with a fiery 7-0 run. The surge included kills from Alcantara, a nasty solo block and a kill from
Kaci Johnson, along with some EMU attacking errors. In the closing moments of the set,
Kaci Johnson, Alcantara, and
Madison Duvall each delivered key kills, securing the 25-15 victory for Guilford.
Set two was dominated by Alcantara, who tallied five kills in that set alone. Duvall, Moore,
Kaci Johnson, and
Maddi Page (Jonesboro, Ga.)—who finished the night with game-high 26 assists, along with eight digs and four kills—helped set the stage before a 7-0 run. During that run, Alcantara and Duvall each contributed kills, while
Madison Bozarth (Greensboro, N.C.) added back-to-back service aces. Stockner and Denby made efforts to regain the lead for EMU, but Guilford capitalized on their errors. Key kills from Duvall,
Vanessa Johnson, Moore, and, of course, Alcantara claimed the set with a score of 25-17.
The final set began with consecutive kills from Alcantara, each assisted by Bozarth and Page, respectively. Woolford's kill sparked a 5-0 run for the Quakers, featuring two kills from
Kaci Johnson, a kill from Moore, and a service ace by
Amber Chiarolanzio (Deep Gap, N.C.). The Quakers were up, 15-8 before the Royals responded with a 5-0 run of their own. Woolford, Meadows, and errors were the cause of this. Following a few errors, combined with kills from Page and Moore, and another ace from Chiarolanzio, Guilford gained the upper hand over EMU, 24-18. Stockner and Custis made an effort to rally for Eastern Mennonite, but Guilford prevailed in the final set, 25-20 to complete the sweep.
Guilford is back in business on Jack Jensen Court against Shenandoah University on Saturday, Oct. 5th at noon.
