GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College rugby team closed out their fall slate of home competition, going 0-2-1 in the Guilford College 7's against a trio of Division-II squads on Saturday on the campus of Guilford College.
The Quakers opened the day falling to Frostburg University, 40-0, and then Newberry College, 24-22, before wrapping up the day with a breakeven result against Emory & Henry at 22-all.
Frostburg University- L, 40-0
In their opening match, the Quakers fought hard until the last minute, but a strong second half pushed the Frostburg Bobcats to victory 40-0.
Jaden Gary (Charlotte, N.C.) worked to create momentum throughout the match, but it was not quite enough to get the Quakers on the board.
Newberry- L, 24-22
Match two saw a complete gear shift, with the Quakers and Newberry Wolves trading off tries. The two standouts were
Jasmine Cartwright (Kalispell, Mont.) and Gary who both touched for two tries, but a conversion by Newberry put the Quakers behind two at the horn, bringing the final score to 24-22.
Emory & Henry University- T, 22-22
In the final match of the day, the first seven minutes were all Guilford, with tries by Cartwright,
JoJo Gonzalez-Jimenez (Inland Empire, Calif.), and Gary. The second half saw a big push by Emory & Henry, but a try by
Jasmine Cartwright helped hold off the Wasps. Final score 22-22.
Overall, an outstanding effort by the Quakers, as they will head to Emory & Henry University on Sunday, October 27th to close out their season.
