No. 25/RV Randolph-Macon Overwhelms Football in ODAC Clash

Davis piles us career-high in tackles despite defeat

ASHLAND, Va. – Behind a bruising ground attack that piled up 475 yards on the ground, No. 25/RV Randolph-Macon College rolled the Guilford College football team, 63-0 on Saturday afternoon at Day Field.

With the defeat, Guilford falls to 3-2, 0-2 in conference play on the season with the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Champion Yellow Jackets advancing to 4-1, 2-0 in league play.

Caleb Robles (Wilmington, N.C.) had a tough day against the stout R-MC defense, completing just 10-of-23 with a trio of interceptions on his way to just 84 yards through the air. He was also GC's leading rusher, taking 16 carries for 54 yards.

JuJu Rice (Raleigh, N.C.) matched his season-high with four receptions albeit for just 34 yards. Jay Daniels (Waycross, Ga.) contributed three grabs for 26 yards receiving and added 104 kick return yards to finish with a game-high 130 all-purpose yards.

Despite multiple carries each, the Guilford rushing committee of Malik Woodard (Wilson, N.C.), Evan Sullivan (McBee, S.C.), and Josh Campbell (Reidsville, N.C.) was ineffective against an R-MC squad that was allowing less than 68 yards per game to opponents coming in, as none of the Quaker backs netted more than five yards on the ground.

Eli Davis (Pikeville, N.C.) shown as a bright spot defensively, accumulating a career and game-high ten tackles, all of them of the individual variety with 1.0 for a loss. Brandon Howell (Knightdale, N.C.) had five total takedowns, second-most by any player on the afternoon. Jaylan Richardson (Summerville, S.C.), Ayden Carpenter (Albermarle, N.C.), and Zy'Quan Williams (Stantonsburg, N.C.) compiled four total tackles each with Williams pairing with Malik Hargrove (Warren County, N.C.) on a tackle for a loss.

Dante Casciola started under center for the Yellow Jackets, but only played the first handful of series, finishing 2-of-4 through the air for 83 yards while running for eight yards on two attempts, scoring once. Ryley Justice went the rest of the way for the hosts going 5-for-9 for 51 yards.

Six different receivers had a catch for R-MC with Jack Landis finishing as he only player with multiple receptions with two for nine yards. Jason Moore had the longest grab with it going for 45 yards.

The hosts had nearly no need for an arial attack anyways, as they bulldozed their way to 475 rushing yards, the most by any team in the ODAC in a game thus far this season, utilizing 11 ballcarriers to reach that mark. DJ James led all players in rushing yards, accumulating 129 yards by himself on just nine totes, finding paydirt three times. Jaxon Jones added 75 yards and a score and Michael Johnson contributed 74 yards and a touchdown. DJ Cone and Will Cranford each added a rushing TD as well.

Much like their rushing conglomerate, the defense for the hosts saw a plethora of players see action with 25 different players recording a tackle. Tony Skinner, Jackson Deaver, and Brandon Watson led the way with three each including 2.0 tackles for a loss by Deaver. Coleton Payne, Collin Farmer, and Caden Bradford all had interceptions with Farmer bringing his back for a pick-six.

Winning the toss and deferring to the second half, Guilford's defense was gashed right away by Randolph-Macon. On the first play from scrimmage, they broke a run play loose for 18 yards. A couple plays later, the hosts threw the football for the first time in the game, hitting a screen to the left for another chunk of 37 ticks to get into the redzone. Casciola polished it off with a keeper a few snaps later to cap off a 7-play, 75-yard march to take the lead, 7-0, right away.

Following a three-and-out by Guilford, the Yellow Jackets struck again. James did some strong work on the ground, but the big play was a 45-yard rainbow to Moore down the left side. James finished it off from five yards out, doubling the advantage after the PAT with a six-play, 80-yard scoring sequence.

The two squads traded minimal drives, before R-MC got their best starting field position due to an interception by Payne, on which Rice lost his footing on the turf. They would require just four rushes, split between James and Kwesi Clarke, to traverse the 58 yards, with James finding paydirt for the second time to make their lead 21 just before the quarter break.

Guilford's offense did get their first fresh set of downs on the first play of the second stanza, with Robles connecting with Drew Winkler (North Wilkesboro, N.C.), and as a result, they did manage to pin the Yellow Jackets deep in their own territory with a punt to the 13. Starting with their worst field position of the afternoon to that point, R-MC was undeterred, requiring just five plays to go 87 yards for the score, capped off by a Mitchell Johnson rush from 23 yards away.

The home team got a pick-six, with Farmer undercutting a Robles throw on-the-move and returning it 41 yards for the score. Another three-and out by the Quakers, with the punt and a penalty putting the hosts at their ten did not slow the Yellow Jackets, who ran the ball for eight yards, then 36 and 46 with James breaking away for a third score in the first half of play.

Guilford found success in the two-minute drill for their final drive of the half. A few Robles scrambles got the initial first down before throws to Rice straddled 16-yard toss to Daniels that stood as the longest play of the game for the GC offense. Another Robles scramble for 13 got them to the ten-yard line, but they would get no closer, and Adriano De Castro's (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) field goal attempt to get points on the board missed wide-left as the first 30 minutes of play expired.

Out of the break, the Quakers built off the offensive momentum that they built at the end of the half, stringing together some nice plays, however, Robles' third interception of the game, this one by the Yellow Jackets' Bradford, halted the drive. Using nine plays, they would go 65 yards to score their seventh TD of the game on a Cranford rush. R-MC added another seven with a five-play, 70-yard scoring drive that was finished by a Jones scoring carry.

Divided by the quarter break, the hosts got another touchdown on a Cone rush from one yard out to finalize an 18-play, 88-yard sequence, and also, after the PAT, finalize the score at 63-0.

Guilford returns to their home turf for the first time in three weeks next Saturday when they will host Washington & Lee University at 4:00 PM on October 19th.
