Guilford Scraps Past Averett in Danville

Tyler Dearman Scores 20-Plus for 10th Time This Season

Eighth-ranked Guilford began a two-game road trip, the first in Danville, to square off against Averett. In a tough contest, the Quakers did just enough to fight past the Cougars in a 52-46 victory, their lowest scoring total so far this season.

Both teams traded baskets to start the first half, but GC immediately began to pull away as time went on. From the 17:27 mark, Guilford (18-2, 9-2) scored 22 of the next 29 points to capture an 11-point lead, thanks in large part to Tyler Dearman's nine points in this stretch. The Quakers stopped the Cougars (4-16, 2-10) in their tracks, holding them to just three out of a possible 11 shots (22-11).

The offensive flow between both squads slowed down near the end of the period; only 14 total points were scored over the last eight minutes of play. Averett outscored Guilford by two (8-6), but the away team maintained a seven-point lead heading into the locker rooms, 26-19.

The Quakers' first half lead proved to be pivotal, as the offense struggled to find their footing in the second. A rare Dearman dunk got Guilford underway, but Averett held their own and refused to back down.

Heading into the last six minutes, GC's lead was shrunk to five (44-39), but a hook shot from Julius Burch and clutch three-pointer from Dearman gave the visitors a 50-42 lead at the three-minute mark. A series of fouls and free throw attempts ensued, but Guilford asserted their dominance and marched on to the six-point triumph. The Quakers won, 52-46.

In this low-scoring affair, Dearman led with 20 points, six rebounds and two steals. Caleb Farrish and Gabe Proctor scored eight each, and Burch led in the rebounding margin with nine.

Up next, Guilford takes a mid-week trip to Virginia for a conference matchup versus Lynchburg. Tip-off on Wednesday, January 31 is set for 5 p.m.
