Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Quakers Lose Heartbreaker to Yellow Jackets

The second-ranked Quakers continued ODAC play, facing off against reigning conference champions, #17 Randolph-Macon. In a neck-and-neck matchup coming down to the wire, GC was unable to knock down crucial jumpers, and fell to just their second loss, 65-61.

Both teams were dead even through the first five minutes of play (8-7), before RMC (12-3, 5-1) powered ahead on a 16-3 run. A common trend for most of the half, the Yellow Jackets knocked down multiple three-pointers, including four in this stretch. At the halfway mark in the first period, the visiting side was up by 12 (22-10).

Guilford (14-2, 5-2) struggled to keep up with RMC's fast-paced outside shooting later on, until they caught a spark late. The Quakers ran down the stretch, ending the half on a 15-3 run, where contributors, including Rob Littlejohn, Caleb Farrish and Luke Proctor knocked down a trio of threes to cut the deficit to three (35-33).

GC opened the second by completely erasing their deficit en route to a four-point lead at 15:21 in the period (45-41), the largest lead that the home side would have for the rest of the contest. Both sides kept trading baskets back and forth, with leads constantly changing. After the 8:33 mark, both defenses stonewalled each other for the next four minutes of play, tied at 54.

The Yellow Jackets began to draw consecutive fouls on various Quakers, getting to the line and knocking down crucial free throws. A Gabe Proctor foul on Keishawn Pulley Jr.'s three-point attempt was a crucial one, giving the visitors a three-lead with 3:46 left to play (58-54).

Farrish brought Guilford back within a point (58-57), with the assist from Tyler Dearman (3:29). Dearman and Julius Burch made a pair of free throws each in the next minute to put the Quakers up by one (61-60), but it was the last lead that it would have for the remainder of the game. Pulley Jr. was the hero for the Yellow Jackets, sinking a shot from beyond the arc with 1:02 left, and Guilford could not come back from this point. At full time, the visiting team came away with the victory, 65-61.

Despite the loss, three Quakers ended in double figures. Dearman led GC in scoring with 23, along with two steals. Burch recorded his third consecutive double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Littlejohn scored 12 points, with eight rebounds.

Guilford looks to rebound on Wednesday, January 17, when #18 Virginia Wesleyan visits Jack Jensen Court at Ragan-Brown Field House. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
