The Guilford College men's lacrosse team hosted Bridgewater College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown. The Quakers dropped the senior day game, 14-7.
The start of the game was a defensive battle but just 2:17 into the action the contest entered a 35 minute weather delay due to lightning in the area.
Both teams returned to the field and picked up where they left off. Bridgewater striked first with a goal at the 9:46 mark.
About three minutes later, Guilford forced a turnover that allowed the offense to set up. Coming off a screen,
Seth Woods fired a shot to even the score at one.
The Eagles responded with 4:42 to go in the period to reclaim the lead. The Quakers struggled to maintain possession as the visitors added another goal to jump ahead by two (3-1).
Both squads went back and forth until the visitors scored one last goal before the end of the period to lead 4-1.
Bridgewater kept the momentum going into the second as it went on a 4-0 scoring stretch. With 5:40 left in the half,
Joe Hirvonen ripped a shot right past the goalie's right ear for the Quakers' second of the game.
Over three minutes later, Guilford found its third goal of the game, this time off the stick of
Gabe Alvarez. Woods picked up an assist as the home squad trailed 8-3.
The two teams shared possession over the final two minutes as the halftime horn sounded. The Eagles maintained their five-goal advantage.
Both teams had equal opportunities to start the second half but neither side was able to capitalize. That held true until the 12:29 mark when Bridgewater found the back of the net.
The visitors added two more goals before Woods picked up his second goal of the contest. Andrew Burch notched the assist as Guilford trailed 11-4.
The Eagles scored once more with 3:19 left in the third. They held the 12-4 lead going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Neither side budged for the opening three-plus minutes until Bridgewater scored. It went on to add another goal to jump ahead 14-4.
With 8:45 remaining in the fourth, Alvarez scored off a pass from
Gavin Brown.
Devin Morse followed with a goal of his own to pull Guilford back within eight (14-6).
Under four minutes later, Brown found the back of the net with a man-up goal with an assist to
Devin Morse.
The final three minutes of regulation was a defensive tilt with Bridgewater coming out on top for the seven-goal victory.
Woods finished the day with three points (2G, 1A) while Alvarez scored two goals.
