Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Quakers Outlast Falcons at Home

The Guilford College women's lacrosse team welcomed the Falcons of Pfeiffer University. The Quakers won its second-straight, 14-9.

For the opening five minutes of the first, the two squads were evenly matched until Pfeiffer scored at the 10:02 mark.

Guilford quickly answered just 17 seconds later when Maggie Bryson found Maggie Hartnett in the middle for the goal. The Quakers followed suit when Sydne Sawyer scored on a free position to take a 2-1 edge with 8:55 on the clock.

Bryson then found the back of the net with her own goal with 7:43 left in the first. After a scoreless four minutes, Sawyer scored on a man-up opportunity. 12 seconds later, Mackenzie Richards streaked down the field off a pass from Hartnett to hand GC a 5-1 lead going to the second.

Similar to the first, it was a stalemate for the first five minutes of the second period. As a repeat of the opening period, the Falcons scored to make it a three-goal game, 5-2. 1:01 later, Pfeiffer scored while a man-down to pull within two, 5-3.

With roughly 4:45 left in the opening half, the Falcons turned over the ball and let Richards sprint down the field. As she drew closer to the net, she passed it off to Hartnett for an easy man-up goal to go back ahead 6-3. Guilford held the advantage until the half.

The third was a little different compared to the first two as it was the Quakers to score the opening goal. Bryson circled around the back of the net and found Hartnett wide open for the goal.

From the 13:33 mark until 5:32, the game became a defensive struggle as both sides forced turnovers while the goalies stood tall in the net. On Guilford's possession, Sawyer found Bryson as she fired a shot off the pass for the goal.

The Quaker offense began to open up as Kylie Horn and Brenna Holden scored to put the team ahead by seven (10-3) with 3:19 remaining in the third. Pfeiffer found the back of the net with 1:33 on the clock but just under 50 seconds later Sawyer responded with her third of the game.

Pfeiffer opened the final period of regulation by scoring the first two goals and cutting the difference down to five, 11-6. The Falcons kept the momentum as they scored two more goals forcing a Guilford timeout with 8:17 on the clock.

Out of the timeout, the Quaker offense put together a set piece as Hartnett found Sawyer for the goal and to end the 4-0 run by the visitors. The pair combined for another goal little over three minutes later to boost GC ahead 13-8.

With just under two minutes left, Richards scooped up a ground ball and scored to open a six-goal advantage. The Falcons notched the final score as the Quakers went on to win by the five-goal margin.

Sawyer finished with five goals and an assist while Hartnett tallied eight points (3G, 5A). Zenna Carson finished with 10 saves on the afternoon.

Guilford opens conference play on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts Randolph-Macon College. Start time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
