Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls Short in ODAC Title Game

A battle of the top 20 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference as the 13th-ranked Quakers faced the 2nd-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon. Guilford fell behind and tried to rally but ultimately fell to Randolph-Macon, 61-48.

The first seven-plus minutes of the game was as advertised by these two teams who faced twice earlier in the season. Both sides matched each other until Tyler Dearman and Julius Burch hit on back-to-back shots to give GC a 12-8 advantage.

Coming out of the first stoppage in the game, Randolph-Macon hit a three off a second-chance play. On Guilford's next trip down the floor, Myles Washington drove the lane and made the layup and drew the foul. The senior forward completed the three-point play as the Quakers led 15-11.

From here, the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:32 to capture a five-point advantage, 20-15. Neither team found the bottom of the net for nearly 90 seconds until Caleb Farrish grabbed the offensive board and put back the easy layup to end the drought.

The Quaker offense went silent over the final five minutes as R-MC scored 11 of the final 13 points. At the break, Randolph-Macon led 31-19.

Out of the locker rooms, the teams matched each other before Guilford used a 13-3 stretch that cut the deficit to four (42-38) with 11:21 left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets expanded its lead but the Quakers were able to stay within single digits.

After two Elijah Bowens free throws, Randolph-Macon held GC scoreless and scored the final five points to secure the 13-point victory and the ODAC Championship.

Dearman led the Quakers with 16 points and five rebounds. Burch corralled 12 boards but it was the Yellow Jackets who won the rebounding battle, 41-29.

Guilford (22-5) will now wait to see if it is chosen for an NCAA Division III Tournament at-large bid. Selection show is on Monday, February 26 at 1:00 p.m.
