The Guilford College men's lacrosse team opened the regular season against crosstown rivals, Greensboro College Pride. Eight-straight goal stretch helped the Quakers nearly double up the Pride, 15-8.
Guilford opened the scoring a minute into the first off the stick of
Andrew Burch. 1:07 later, Burch netted his second goal to give the Quakers a 2-0 edge. Greensboro scored the last goal of the first to cut the deficit in half.
Joe Hirvonen opened the scoring the second with a man-up goal. The Pride responded with two-straight to even the score with 8:36 left in the first half. Burch completed the hat trick before Greensboro tied it once more.
Hirvonen found the back of the net with just seven seconds left in the first half as
Gabe Alvarez picked up an assist. Guilford led 5-4 at the half.
The third period was all Quakers as they scored all six goals with two from
Devin Morse. In the fourth, Guilford's
Gavin Brown scored his second of the game to complete an eight-goal run as the visitors led 12-4.
For the remainder of the contest, the two teams matched goals as the Quakers won by the seven-goal difference.
Hirvonen finished the evening with three goals and four assists. Morse and Burch each tallied four goals and a total of five points.
Gavin Dellinger started in next, playing just over 59 minutes with 11 saves in the win.
Guilford (1-0) travels to Pfeiffer University on Tuesday, February 21 for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
