GC Fights off Late Charge for Road Win

The Guilford College women's basketball team traveled to Roanoke, Virginia to face Hollins University. Despite a strong fourth from the hosts, the Quakers were victorious, 66-57.

In the opening period, Hollins (3-6, 0-6) scored the opening basket as both sides struggled from the field. Guilford (4-1, 2-1) started to take over as it went on a 13-3 run with five points from Courtney McMillan and Ashtyn Zeigler. The hosts scored the final two points as the Quakers led 13-7 going into the second.

The second quarter was a tighter affair but the visitors slowly started to pull away. As Hollins was making free throws, Guilford was converting field goals to outscore Hollins 15-9. When the halftime horn sounded, the Quakers led by 12 (28-16).

Opening the third period, Hollins cut the deficit to single digits (32-23) but Guilford did not let that last too long. The Quakers closed the frame on a 12-4 run with five points from McMillan. Going into the final 10 minutes of regulation, Guilford led 44-27.

Hollins had its strongest performance in the fourth quarter. The hosts doubled its point total with 30 points in the frame. However, the Quakers were able to keep pace with the home side as it never lost the lead and won by the nine-point margin.

McMillan led the team with 14 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Anna Giannopoulou finished with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds with four steals. GC won the battle on the boards, 62-53.

Guilford remains on the road as it will face the University of Lynchburg on Saturday, December 9. Start is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
