Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

GC Comfortably Dispatches Southern Virginia

The Guilford College men's basketball team hosted game two of the Holiday Classic against Southern Virginia University. Quality defense and consistent shot-making were on point, as the Quakers took care of the Knights, 69-41.

SVU's only lead of the game came in the first minute, while Guilford quickly had a 10-point lead; graduate forward Rob Littlejohn with six of the home side's points to start. The visitors eventually grew comfortable, reducing their deficit to as little as a basket, with 11:03 to go in the first period (13-11).

However, foul woes began to trouble the Knights, as Julius Birch drew multiple fouls, helping to extend the Quaker's lead. In the first half alone, Birch attempted and made more free throws than the visiting squad had all game. His nine points helped propel Guilford to a 15-point lead at the half (34-19).

After intermission, both teams kept pace with each other, the home side's lead altering by little. The Quakers began to pull away after the 12:15 mark, stonewalling the SVU offense for almost six minutes straight on a 12-4 run. In this stretch, Guilford's defense held the Knights to a single field goal, while making five of their own. Tyler Dearman caught fire, making two deep beyond the arc.

GC maintained its large lead until the end, a defensively dominant 18-point victory. Dearman led the team with 17 points, going 4-7 from beyond the arc. Julius Birch put on a defensive clinic with 11 rebounds and seven steals, to go along with 15 points of his own. Littlejohn was the third Quaker in double figures with 10.

As a team, Guilford held SVU to just 15 made field goals (31.9%), while making 24 (48.0%). The home team held the rebound advantage (33-29), and dominated in points scored off turnovers (21-5).

Once more, the Quakers will host the second game of tomorrow's Holiday Classic action. After the conclusion of LaGrange vs. Southern Virginia, GC will take the floor against William Peace. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
