GC Drops Home Game on Senior Day

The Guilford College football team welcomed Averett University on the final home game of the season. The Quakers fell to the Cougars, 34-13.

Guilford received the opening kickoff as Tristan Bailey caught the ball at the 11 and went 89 yards down the field for the opening score. A mishandle on the hold of the extra point caused a miss and kept the score 6-0 in favor of the home team.

Averett went three-and-out on its first drive but the Quakers did the same on their next drive. The Cougars started their next drive on their own 37. The visitors put together a 12-play, 63-yard drive that ended with a two-yard rushing touchdown. The point after was converted as Averett led 7-6 with 7:53 left in the first.

On its next drive, Guilford struggled on first and second down. On third down, Jaelan Brown dropped back and was intercepted at the 24-yard line as it was returned into the endzone for a touchdown. Another successful point after gave Averett a 14-6 advantage.

Bailey Baker entered the game at quarterback for the Quakers on the next drive. A mix of pass and rush moved the ball down the field. On second-and-nine, Baker dropped back and looked left to find Parker DeHart in the endzone for a 29-yard touchdown. Burke Nettles' extra point pulled GC within one (14-13) with 2:13 remaining in the first.

What seemed to be the start of a high-scoring affair, Averett's next drive spanned into the second quarter. Just 1:14 into the second, the Cougars connected on a 28-yard pass and catch to expand their lead back to eight (21-13).

Each offense stalled a little bit as there were three punts before Montrel Cooper intercepted Averett's quarterback and set up the Guilford offense on the visitors' side of the 50. GC moved the ball down the field and into the redzone but on third-and-10, Baker's pass bounced off the receiver's shoulder and was intercepted.

Averett ran out the clock and carried its 21-13 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Quakers struggled offensively as they punted the ball on their first two drives. GC also turned the ball over once more while the Cougars made two field goals to expand the lead to two scores (27-13).

Guilford turned the ball over on downs for its next drive as Averett used 40 yards on six plays to score the final touchdown of the game and give the visiting team the 21-point win.

Guilford heads to Bridgewater College on Saturday, November 11 for the final game of the year. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
