Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Quakers Edged Out in Penalty Kicks

The fifth-seeded Guilford College women's soccer team faced the fourth-seeded Bridgewater College Eagles in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Quakers battled the Eagles to penalty kicks but ultimately fell on the road, 1-1 (5-4).

From the early start of the half, Bridgewater controlled a majority of the possession. Despite the ball being in its defensive zone, Guilford's back line and Ady Frankn stopped each opportunity.

A couple of shots made their way through but Franken made each save including one that she punched over the crossbar.

In the 43rd minute, the Quakers had a corner kick taken by Kylee Berry. Berry's kick bounced in the box as the Eagles defender made a save at the line.

As the ball was loose in front of the goal, Grace Garraghty found the ball and scored in the lower left corner to give GC a 1-0 lead. The visitors held that advantage into the half.

The second half was a replica of the first with the home squad controlling the pace of play. In the 71st minute, a foul was called in the box that set up a penalty kick for the Eagles. Bridgewater capitalized on the chance and evened the score at one.

Bridgewater kept the pressure up and held the ball in the offensive zone. In the waning seconds, the ball was played into the box but the final horn sounded, sending the game into overtime tied at one.

The first overtime period was even between the two sides. Each side had a chance but were unable to capitalize as the game ventured to a second overtime period.

Much like the first overtime, play was evenly split. Neither back line let a ball through as it was headed to penalty kicks.

In penalty kicks, Kylee Berry stepped up and converted the first chance. Bridgewater responded on its first try. Baylee Greenwood was the next Quaker to attempt but the Eagles' Carlee Gaboury made a diving save to her right.

From there both teams matched each other with goals as Bridgewater took the penalty kicks, 5-4.

Guilford finishes the year 12-2-4 with a conference record of 6-2-2.
