Quakers Battle Maroons in Crucial Conference Matchup

The Guilford College women's soccer team made the away trip to Roanoke, Va., to face Roanoke College in a top-five conference matchup. In a hard-fought defensive contest, the Quakers battled to a 1-1 draw.

The first half was evenly contested, with both sides constantly trying to find ways through the opposing backlines. There were only seven total shots, five of which came from the Maroons. Goalkeepers Hannah Aemisegger and Quaker Ady Franken combined for two saves.

Guilford broke through shortly after the second half kickoff; a goal from Baylee Greenwood gave the visiting side a 1-0 lead. This marked her 11th goal of the season, a new career-high.

Continued pressure from Roanoke rewarded them, equalizing in the 75th minute; the goal from MC Petrucelli. The Maroons almost took the lead four minutes later, but Franken made a crucial save from the high left corner to preserve the tie. She made yet another save in the 85th minute, her third of the night. A last minute miss from the Maroons assured a draw.

On the night, Roanoke totaled 11 shots to Guilford's four. Eight total corners were taken between the sides. Franken totaled three saves, continuing her run of clutch shot-stopping.

Guilford (10-1-2, 3-1-1) returns to Armfield Athletic Center, facing conference rival Lynchburg on Saturday, October 14. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
