The Guilford College women's rugby team made history with its first two 7s against Newberry College. The Quakers fell in game one, 15-10, before bouncing back and winning 17-0 for the first win in program history.
Game 1: Newberry 15, Guilford 10
Guilford opened the scoring as sophomore Portia Star Jones converted on the first try. Newberry quickly responded as Taqwai Seburn got the Wolves on the board. Later in the first half, Seburn found herself streaking down the right side and scored the try. At the half, Newberry led 10-5.
In the second half, it was the Quakers that scored first once again, this time from freshman
Savannah Marchinsky. However, the tie was short-lived as Vicky Noel scored for Newberry as it held on for the 15-10 win.
Game 2: Guilford 17, Newberry 0
Just like the first game, it was Guilford that got on the board first. This time freshman Sarah Pitts scored the try while junior Caroline Wilkerson converted on the kick to put GC ahead 7-0. Later in the half, Pitts once again scored and extended the lead to 12.
After taking the opening kick of the second half, Jones streaked down the middle of the field and scored the try as the Quakers were ahead 17-0. Guilford held on for the first win in program history.
Guilford will travel to Division I, Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday, September 10. First game starts at 2:00 p.m.
