Women's Volleyball Drops 5-Set Match

The Guilford College women's volleyball team traveled to Salem, Virginia for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup with the Maroons of Roanoke College. The Quakers fell to the Maroons in five sets, 3-2.

Roanoke (6-5, 1-2)  captured the first lead of the set, 5-3. Guilford (2-9, 0-2) responded with an 8-1 run to go ahead 11-6 and force a home timeout. The Maroons tried to battle back, pulling within two (15-13) but the Quakers held the edge, 22-17.

The home team came out of its second timeout and claimed seven of the next eight points to lead 24-23. GC won the final three points including a kill from Faith Fennell to win the set, 26-24.

In the second set, Roanoke grasped the early (5-1) but Guilford chipped away at the deficit and tied the set at nine. The Maroons began to pull away and led by seven at one point (19-12). The Quakers were able to reduce the difference to three (21-18) but Roanoke went on to win the set, 25-19.

Guilford held the early advantage in the third set, 6-1. From there, Roanoke won 14 of the next 17 points to go ahead by six (15-9). The Quakers pieced together an offensive attack and eventually tied the set at 20. The Maroons won the next two points to force a timeout. Out of the break, GC pulled within one twice (22-21 and 23-22) but Roanoke won the final two points to take the set, 25-22.

The fourth set began similarly to the third with Guilford going ahead 9-3 to force a Roanoke timeout. Out of the timeout, the Maroons cut the lead down to three on multiple occasions but the Quakers opened their lead to eight (22-14). Roanoke claimed the next two points but an error and two aces from Maddi Page sealed the win, 25-16.

In the fifth and final set, the hosts jumped out to a commanding 7-2 lead. Guilford notched the next three points including two kills by Natalie Moore to force a Maroon timeout. The Quakers cut the deficit to two (10-8) but Roanoke took five of the final seven points to win the set (15-10) and the match (3-2).

Moore led the way for the Quakers with 17 kills and 10 digs while Kaci Johnson totaled 13 kills and four blocks. Defensively, Lydia Saunders led the way with 23 digs while Page added 36 assists.

Guilford remains on the road as it travels to Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday night. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
