The Guilford College women's rugby team traveled to Lander University to play the Bearcats. The Quakers fell by the final score of 22-5.
The Bearcats started out strong by scoring off a handling error by the Quakers on the opening kick. The Bearcats struck again at the four-minute mark with another try, making the score 10-0.
After a couple of gutsy runs by both
Sarah Pitts and
Portia Star Jones, the Quakers pieced together some strong phase play and got onto the board byÂ
Elise Kaplan punching in a try from five meters out as time expired.Â
As the half ended, Guilford trailed Lander, 10-5. Â
The second half started much like the first. A bouncing ball off of the kick lead to a quick try for the Bearcats, putting them up 15-5.
After an injury, the Quakers were left with six players on the field but they fought hard over the final three minutes. Lander scored once more as time expired and converted the kick to win by the 17-point margin.
Guilford has nearly two weeks until its next game, Saturday, October 1 at Alderson Broaddus University. Start time is slated for 11:30 a.m.
