The Guilford College football team hosted the Huntingdon College Hawks in the final non-conference game of the season. After striking first, the Quakers fell to the Hawks, 47-7.
Guilford quarterback
Bailey Baker went 4-14 on the day for 106 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Joseph Brown Jr. led the ground game with 33 yards while
Tre Alexander caught one ball for 75 yards and a score.
Guilford (1-2) received the opening kickoff as it was set up on its own 25. The first play from scrimmage, Baker dropped back and found Alexander down the right sideline. The senior wide receiver made a defender miss and had a clear path for the 75-yard score.
Cameron Haiduven converted the extra point to go up 7-0 just 16 seconds into the game.
Huntingdon (2-1) began its first drive and started to move the ball into Quaker territory. On third and eight, the Hawks passed the ball but
Logan Dodson intercepted the ball and returned it into visitor territory. Unfortunately, an illegal block in the back and an unsportsmanlike conduct moved the ball to the other side of the 50 yardline.
The Quakers were unable to pick up a first down on their next possession as they punted the ball back to the Hawks. Huntingdon used three rushes and found itself at the Guilford 13. Kahari McReynolds carried the ball on the next play and trucked to the two but
Tristian Bailey stripped the ball away. The ball trundled through the endzone for a touchback, giving GC the ball back.
Unable to move the chains, Guilford punted the ball away as HC took over at the Quaker 45. A 15-yard rush followed by a 15-yard penalty, the Hawks were setup at the 15. The visitors connected on a 22-yard pass for the score in the back right corner of the endzone. A successful PAT tied the game at seven with 4:04 to go in first.
Guilford went three-and-out but a fumble on the punt return gave GC the ball back at the Huntingdon 39. After a 16-yard pass to
Eric Mays, the Quakers failed to pick up another first down. Haiduven and the kicking unit trotted out to attempt a 32-yard field goal. The kick was blocked, scooped up and returned 15 yards to the HC 47.
The Hawks used runs of 24 and 29 yards to find the endzone for the score. The extra point was blocked but the Hawks led 13-7 at the 59-second mark of the first.Â
In the second quarter, Guilford's offensive struggles continued as Huntingdon scored on a 10-yard pass and a six-yard run to lead 27-7 at the half.
Huntingdon controlled the second half as well, adding three more touchdowns and two extra points as it went on to win by the 40-point margin.
Guilford has a bye this week and will return to the gridiron on Saturday, October 1 in the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup of the year. The Quakers will travel to Ashland, Virginia to face the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
