The Guilford College baseball team made the trek to Virginia Beach to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan in the final doubleheader of the season. The Quakers won the first game before falling in the second.
Game 1: Guilford 11, Va. Wesleyan 10
Virginia Wesleyan opened the scoring with a RBI single up the middle. Guilford answered in the top of the second when
Izaac McGuire homered. With the game tied at one, Isaiah Hariston hit a three-run homer as
Michael Sumner and
Bryce Vestal scored.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Marlins pulled within one as two runs scored on single to center field. The ensuing half inning, McGuire led the inning off with his second home run of the game.
Later in the inning, Vestal doubled to right field to plate
Nick Boles. Sumner followed with a single up the middle as
Adam Anderson and Vestal scored. Leading 8-3, the Quakers added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
The hosts looked to chip away and started to do so with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Down by eight (12-4), the hosts cut the deficit in half with one swing as a grand slam flew over the wall.
After a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, the Marlins looked to complete the comeback. It started with a RBI single. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, VWU pulled within one (11-10) on a passed ball. With two outs and runners on second and third,
Ty Clark got a ground out for the final out of the game.
Sumner led the Quakers going 3-6 with three RBI and a run while Vestal collected two hits with three runs and driving in a run.
Logan Dodson picked up the win, throwing 5.2 innings while giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out three.
Game 2: Va. Wesleyan 12, Guilford 1 (7 Inn.)
Game two was completely opposite to game one with the hosts scoring the first two runs in the opening frame. The Marlins added three runs in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth.
VWU's final run was scored in the sixth. The Quakers got on the board in the top of the seventh as
Carter Blum scored on a wild pitch.
Guilford wraps up the season 11-22 overall and 5-15 in conference play.
