The Guilford College baseball team headed north for a conference doubleheader against Washington and Lee University. The Quakers split with the Generals on the afternoon.
Game 1: Guilford 7, Wash. and Lee 1
After a scoreless first inning, Wash. and Lee got on the board first with a RBI single to right. The Generals held the advantage until the top of the fourth when
Isaiah Hairston homered down the right field line to tie the game.
Later in the inning,
Michael Sumner singled to right center as
Austin Bailey and
Adam Anderson scored to give Guilford a 3-1 lead. From there,
Jackson Marcellus took over and set down the opposing lineup in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, Sumner added to the Quakers lead as he scored on a wild pitch. Ahead by three (4-1) GC grew its lead in the eighth. The two runs of the inning scored on a RBI single by Sumner.
In the next at-bat,
Bryce Vestal singled up the middle to drive home
Hayes Henderson. With a 7-1 lead, Marcellus forced the hosts to go 1-2-3 in the eighth and ninth to secure the win.
Sumner went 3-4 from the plate with four runs batted in and scoring once. Hairston collected three hits while Vestal and Bailey each had two.
Marcellus threw a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out three.
Game 2: Wash. and Lee 12, Guilford 2
Game two was completely different to the first with Wash. and Lee scoring four runs on five hits and an error. In the third, the Generals added two runs to go ahead 6-0.
GC got on the board in the top of the fourth with a double to right center off the bat of
Colin Smith. Vestal scored on a throwing error. Following, Hairston singled to right center to bring home Smith.
In the bottom of the sixth, the hosts capitalized on two hits and two errors as they added five runs. Wash. and Lee capped off the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth for the 12-2 victory.
Guilford (6-15, 1-8) returns to McBane Field on Monday, April 4 against Ferrum College. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
