After taking an early lead, the Guilford College men's lacrosse team fought off a late surge by Virginia Wesleyan to secure the 18-14 win.
Guilford (5-7, 3-4) opened the game with the first goal at the 12:44 mark off the stick of
Kyle Smaw. This jump started a 5-0 run by the Quakers with goals from
Justin Barry (2),
Devin Morse and
Nick Honkomp.
Virginia Wesleyan (5-9, 2-6) scored its first goal with 4:23 left in the first. Morse then found
Gabe Alvarez to extend the lead back to five before the Marlins added another goal before the end of the period.
It took 3:29 into the second for GC to find the back of the net once more when
Andrew Burch scored. Morse followed with his second of the game with an assist from
Aimery Workman. Va. Wesleyan netted a man-up goal but Honkomp answered at the 6:50 mark to give the Quakers a 9-3 lead.
The visitors tallied one more before Morse, Barry and Honkomp each scored as Guilford led 12-4 at the half.
The Marlins notched the first goal of the second half just 11 seconds in. Barry scored his fourth of the game with 11:31 on the clock, Morse picked up an assist on the score. Va. Wesleyan rattled off three-straight goals to pull within five (13-8). The final goal of the third came from GC's Morse with a helper from Honkomp.
Mark Sprague of Va. Wesleyan scored to start the fourth but Honkomp and
Joseph Hirvonen went back-to-back scores to open the Quakers lead to seven (16-9). The Marlins scored two more before Honkomp netted his fifth goal of the contest. The visitors cut the deficit to four (17-13) with goals just 10 seconds apart.
However, time was in favor of Guilford as Smaw scored with just 41 seconds left in regulation. Despite a last second goal for Va. Wesleyan, the Quakers held on for the four-goal win.
Honkomp led all players with eight points (5G, 3A) while Morse added seven points (4G, 3A). Nine different Quakers tallied a point on the afternoon.
Jax Atkins went 23-35 in the faceoff circle.
Guilford is set to travel to Washington and Lee University on Saturday, April 23. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
