The Guilford College men's lacrosse team hosted Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers grabbed early control and never looked back, winning 15-5.
The first period was a defensive battle between both squads. With one second left on the clock,
Justin Barry quickly found
Joseph Hirvonen for the first goal. Despite only leading by one, Guilford (2-5, 1-2) out shot Ferrum by 12 (15-3).
Midway through the second, the Quakers offense erupted for three goals from
Devin Morse (2G, 1A) and Hirvonen (1G, 1A) over a 34 second span. Ferrum (2-6, 0-4) got on the board at the 4:43 mark of the second. Neither team scored for the remainder of the half as GC led 4-1.
The Panthers kept their momentum into the third by scoring the first goal of the half. 21 seconds later,
Nick Honkomp scored while the Quakers were a man-down. Hirvonen completed the hat trick with 7:29 on the clock with an assist from Honkomp.
The third consecutive goal for Guilford came off the stick of Honkomp off a pass from
Thomas Goodwin. Ferrum found the back of the net with 16 seconds left in the third but Hirvonen responded just six seconds later as
Gabe Alvarez found him after corralling the faceoff.
In the fourth, the Quakers took control by out-scoring the visitors 7-2 with goals from Alvarez, Honkomp, Morse and Barry. GC went on to win by the 10-goal margin.
Honkomp led all scorers with nine points (4G, 5A) while Morse and Hirvonen each scored four goals and assisted on another. In the faceoff circle,
Jax Atkins almost had a perfect day, winning 20 of 21 attempts.
Ryan Reed picked up the win, making eight saves in the net.
As a team, the Quakers registered 65 shots, 31 on goal. The team was 16-19 in clears and corralled 49 ground balls compared to 16 for the Panthers.
Guilford will host Randolph College on Saturday, April 2. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
