Quakers Fall to Hornets

The Guilford College men's lacrosse team battled Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon. The Quakers fell to the Hornets, 15-7.

Shenandoah (6-2, 2-0) opened the scoring just over a minute into the game. The Hornets added to their lead by scoring back-to-back shots from Zachary Heiderman and Tyler Held. 

Guilford (2-5, 0-2) was able to put their first goal on the board at 10:31 by Andrew Burch shortly after the goal from the Hornets. Shenandoah added three more goals before the Quakers ended the first with a Justin Barry goal but trailed by four (6-2).

Shenandoah started the second period by scoring the first goal again, increasing their lead on the Quakers, 7-2. Before going into halftime, the Quakers' Nick Honkomp found the back of the net while the Hornets answered with two goals and led 10-3 at the half

Opening the start of the second half, Honkomp scored another goal, assisted by Burch, while being man-up. After a ground ball pickup, the Hornets responded by scoring back-to-back goals just over two minutes apart. Shenandoah ended the third in the lead by eight (12-4).. 

In the fourth, Shenandoah won the faceoff and scored within seconds of the start by Tyler Held. Two minutes after the Hornets scored, the Quakers returned to the offensive side and scored a goal by Honkomp.  

For the remainder of regulation, the Quakers and the Hornets scored two more times before the period ended. Shenandoah held on for the eight-goal victory.

Honkomp led GC with four total points with three goals and one assist. The senior also tallied six shots on goal. Ryan Reed made 11 saves in net for the Quakers.

Guilford returns home for the next match against Ferrum College on Saturday, March 26. The start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
