The Guilford College men's tennis team hosted Averett University in non-conference play. The Cougars defeated the Quakers, 7-2.
In doubles, the team of
Drake Schreiber and
Evan Wong fell in first doubles, 8-2. At third doubles,
Andrew Ferris and
Dominik Pocrnja were defeated 8-3.
The final match to to finish in doubles action was in second doubles. The pairing of
Jay Montague and
Tye Sasser battled till the end but fell, 8-7.
At singles, Wong, Sasser and Pocrnja were taken down in straight sets. Ferris was victorious in third singles, 6-2 and 6-3. Montague added another win for Guilford at second singles, 7-5 and 6-4.
Despite the match being decided, the final match going on was at first singles between Shori Nishizoe of Averett and
Drake Schreiber. Schreiber claimed the first set, 7-6. Nishizoe claimed the second set 6-3 and forced a tiebreaker to decided the match. Both sides went back-and-forth but Nishizoe got the upper hand, 10-7.
Guilford (4-2) travels to Roanoke on Friday, March 18 to battle the Maroons. Start time is set to 2:00 p.m.
