Guilford Hosts Greensboro

The Guilford College baseball faced off against crosstown foes, Greensboro College. Both teams went to lumber yard with the Quakers falling short, 20-15.

The scoring happened early and often in the first. Greensboro (3-1) used six hits, three walks and an error to jump out to a 9-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Guilford (1-4) got on the board as Isaiah Hairston singled to right center to bring home Bryce Vestal. Both Hayes Henderson and Adam Anderson followed with back-to-back doubles to score three more runs, trailing 9-4.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second with the Pride adding a run on a single in the top of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Vestal doubled down the right field line as Carter Blum and Jordan Burrough scored. During the next at-bat, Michael Sumner scored on a balk. Guilford was behind by three runs, 10-7.

In the next half inning, Greensboro added another run to its total off a double. The Quakers responded with a run of their own in the fifth as Blum lined a ball down the left field line to plate Anderson. The Pride followed suit in the sixth as they scored two off a single through the right side.

Guilford looked to answer and did so in the bottom of the sixth. Hairston drove in his second run of the game to get the scoring started. The Quakers pieced together two more singles followed by double to score four more runs to even the score at 13.

Greensboro recaptured the lead in the seventh, scoring six runs on four hits and an error to lead 19-13. Guilford cut the deficit to four with a single through the left side from Henderson and then Colin Smith scoring on a throwing error.

Neither team added to its total in the eighth unfortunately, the visitors scored another one in the top of the ninth. The Quakers were not able to string anything together in the bottom half of the inning and fell by five runs (20-15).

Vestal went 4-6 from the plate, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Anderson was 2-5 with three RBI and two runs while Blum drove in three runs on two hits and scored once.
