Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Guilford Survives Battle with Hampden-Sydney

The Guilford College men's basketball went head and head with Hampden-Sydney in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. The Quakers were able to defeat the Tigers in a tight battle, 62-59.

Opening the first half within seconds, Jorden Davis made a clean three pointer assisted by Jaylen Gore. Hampden-Sydney (11-8, 6-6) put its first two points on the board at 16:46.

Most of the first half, both teams were able to be right behind one another, tying the score multiple times. At 3:37, Guilford (14-5, 10-2) took the lead and did not turn back. With just three seconds on the clock, Caleb Fisher made both free throws to conclude a 13-5 run to lead 33-25 at the half.

Coming out of halftime, the Quakers opened up with Julius Burch making both free throws, putting GC up by 10. Both teams continued to work on the court with defensive plays and intense moments.

The Tigers were able to close the gap with a three pointer followed by a jumper to trail 39-38 with 14:34 to go in regulation. Towards the middle of the second half, things started to get a little rowdy. Both teams were putting points on the board back to back, tying the score three times, 43-43, 46-46, and 48-48.

After the visitors took the lead (51-50) with a three, the Quakers scored eight-consecutive points to lead 58-51. Although the Tigers were trailing behind, they did not give up as they took the lead with 27 seconds on the clock, 59-58.

Coming out of a timeout by Hampden-Sydney, Guilford brought the ball up the court. Gore passed the ball to the right wing for Davis. Davis then drove the right block and made a layup with 15 seconds on the clock to retake the lead (60-59).

The Tigers tried to find their hottest shooter of the evening, Alex Elliott. Elliott fired a three but missed as Liam Ward grabbed the rebound and drew a foul. Ward made both of his free throws to seal the three-point victory.

Jorden Davis led all scorers with 23 points, going 8-14 from the field and 5-8 from long range. Ward finished with 11 points while Burch added eight points and nine rebounds (5 off., 4 def.).

The Quakers shot 40-percent (20-50) from the field with 11 second chance points. The Tigers out rebounded the Quakers 34-31 in the game.

Guilford will remain at home on Thursday, February 10, to battle the Lynchburg Hornets. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
