The Guilford College softball team faced the Salem College Spirits in a home doubleheader. The Quakers swept the Spirits, 12-1 and 4-3.
Game 1: Guilford 12, Salem 1 (5 Inn.)
In the first inning, Guilford scored the first run as
Ally Morales reached on a fielder's choice as
Kassidy Lancos crossed home plate. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, the Quakers looked to add to their lead.
Katey Griswold opened the scoring with a double to bring home
Grace Calus. Two at-bats later,
Caitlyn Ray hit a two-run homer to put GC ahead 4-0.
Salem was held scoreless in the third with Guilford coming to the plate. With two outs in the inning, the Quakers scored five runs on four hits and an error. The inning was capped off by a three-run blast from
Alli Clemens.
The Spirits got on the board in the top of the fourth with a RBI double but that would be the end of the scoring for the visitors. GC added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI double from Lancos and a RBI single from Clemens.
Shiloh Gray got Salem to go down in order to secure the win. Clemens went 4-4 from the plate with four RBI and a homerun. Lancos was 3-3 with two runs batted in and scored.
Gray pitched all five innings, allowing the lone run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Game 2: Guilford 4, Salem 3
Neither team scored for the first two innings until Salem broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third. The Spirits scored three runs on three hits and an error.
Salem held on to the lead as Guilford scored in the bottom of the fourth as
Emma Patterson crossed home. The Spirits went down in order in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom half of the inning, Lancos singled to centerfield as Patterson and Clemens scored to even the score at three. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh as the Quakers looked to take the series.
Clemens reached on a walk and then advanced to third as an error allowed Patterson to get on base. Calus hit a fly ball to right field as Clemens was able to tag up and secure the win.
Lancos was 1-4 with three RBI while Clemens and Patterson each scored two runs.
Shiloh Gray picked up the win, throwing four innings in relief, giving up one hit and striking out four.
Guilford (2-6) will host Mary Baldwin University on Sunday, March 6 for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
