The Guilford College softball team made the journey to Raleigh, N.C. to face William Peace University in a doubleheader. The Pacers got the best of the Quakers in both games, 6-5 and 17-7.
Game 1: William Peace 6, Guilford 5
In the first game, Guilford scored the first run as
Kassidy Lancos scored on a wild pitch. William Peace responded in its half of the inning with a RBI single to even the score.
Neither side added a run in the second with the Quakers also going scoreless in the third. The Pacers led off its half of the third with a solo shot over the fence to take a 2-1 edge.
In the following inning, GC evened the game as
Katey Griswold scored on an error. Unfortunately, the even tied game was short lived as WPU scored two runs on a single down the left field line.
In the top of the fifth,
Nikki Tuttle doubled down the right field line to cut the deficit to one (4-3) as
Ally Morales scored. In the next at-bat,
Grace Calus doubled to plate
Kylee Duarte who was in to pinch run. Calus eventually scored on an error to give the Quakers a 5-4 lead.
The Pacers quickly responded with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to go back ahead by one (6-5). In the sixth, Guilford had runners in scoring position put were unable to capitalize and eventually went on to fall by the long run, 6-5.
Caitlyn Ray,
Emma Patterson and Tuttle each tallied two hits in the game.
Shiloh Gray pitched four innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits and two walks.
Game 2: William Peace 17, Guilford 7 (5 Inn.)
In the second game, William Peace exploded for 14 runs in the opening frame. The hosts did so on 11 hits and five errors committed by the Quakers.
GC got on the board in the second with a single from
Lauren Bowman as
Ally Coker scored. Later in the inning, Bowman and
Casey Bunting scored on an error.
Unfortunately, the deficit proved too large to overcome as the Quakers fell in five innings. Ray went 2-3 from the pate while driving in two runs.
Guilford (0-4) remains in the Raleigh area as it faces Meredith College on Sunday, February 20 in a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
