The Guilford College baseball team opened the 2022 season at McBane Field against Penn State Abington. The Quakers fell to the Nittany Lions, 26-15.
Penn State Abington opened the scoring just two batters in with a home run to left field. Two batters later, the Nittany Lions added another run via the long ball as they led 3-0 going to the bottom of the first.
Guilford responded as quickly as the visitors took the lead with a two-run homer by
Austin Bailey as
Bryce Vestal scored. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Quakers added another run as
Grayson Tudor scored on a wild pitch to even the score.
In the second, Penn State Abington capitalized on hits and errors to regain the lead. The Lions scored eight runs on five hits, two walks and two errors to go ahead 11-3.
Neither team added a run until the top of the fourth when the visitors added another run on three hits. In the bottom half of the inning, Guilford's Vestal doubled to center to plate
Michael Sumner and
Nick Boles.
Two at-bats later,
Colin Smith had a sacrifice fly to center to plate Vestal.
Isaiah Hairston followed with a home run that sailed over the right field wall with
Austin Bailey on base. Later in the inning,
Hayes Henderson singled through the left side to bring home Tudor as GC cut the deficit to three (12-9).
Penn State Abington added to its lead in its half of the fifth. It scored three runs on two hits as it drew three walks. The Nittany Lions held a 15-9 advantage until the bottom of the seventh when Vestal singled in Boles. Later in the inning, Smith singled up the middle cut difference back to three (15-12).
The top of the eighth saw the visitors add to its lead as it pieced together four hits that plated five runs including three extra base hits. The Quakers scored two more runs in its half of the eighth with a RBI single from Boles and Dilday bringing in a run on a fielder's choice.
Penn State Abington grew its lead in the ninth with six runs on four hits to go ahead 26-14. In the bottom of the final frame, Guilford's fell short as it scored a run on a walk drawn by
Adam Anderson.
Boles led GC with three hits, two runs, a RBI and a walk. Vestal went 2-5 from the plate but drove in three runs while scoring three more times.
Guilford will face Penn State Abington on Sunday, February 20 at McBane Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
