The Guilford College women's basketball hosted the Averett University Cougars. Despite a second half surge by the Cougars, the Quakers weathered it and won 86-78.
Lindsay Gauldin led all scorers with 31 points with five rebounds and four steals. Gauldin went 11-19 from the field with a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.
Coming out of halftime, Guilford (5-1, 2-1) led 43-30. Both teams traded baskets for the first three minutes of the third until the Quakers went on an 8-0 run to garner a 21-point advantage, 58-37.
Averett (2-5, 0-3) responded with a run of its own, 17-6, to cut the difference to just 10 (64-54) with 1:03 remaining on the clock. By the end of the third, GC led 67-55.
The fourth was full of fireworks as the pace of play completely picked up. The teams exchanged blows until the Cougars pulled within six (74-68) with 5:57 left in regulation.Â
Gauldin provided the guidance the Quakers needed as she scored five of the team's final 10 points. Averett tried to chip away but time ran out on the visitors.
Ashtyn Zeigler and
Taylor Dunn joined Gauldin with double-digit points as they scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. As a team, GC scored 49 points off turnovers and had 44 scored in the paint.
Guilford hits the road as it will face Randolph College on Saturday, December 3. Start time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
