Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

GC Wins Conference Opener

The Guilford College women's basketball team visited the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup. The Quakers took over the Marlins house with a score of 58-37.

The Quakers were led by J'la Hinson and Lindsay Gauldin with 14 points. Hinson tallied six steals and two rebounds while Gauldin finished with three assists and 12 rebounds. Anna Giannopoulou was right behind with 13 points and seven rebounds. As a team Guilford was 32.9% (23-70) from the field. 

The Marlins started off by putting the first two points on the board within the first 15 seconds of the quarter. The Quakers responded with a three pointer by Giannopoulou assisted by Hinson. As both squads went back and forth with taking the lead, Guilford was able to take the lead in the middle of the quarter with back-to-back baskets by Gauldin, 8-6. Keeping a lead for the rest of the game the Quakers ended the quarter 15-11. 

The second quarter started off similar to the first with the host putting the first two points on the board. GC maintained its advantage and increased it to eight by the middle of the quarter, 24-16. The Marlins continued to fight and added five more points to end the quarter, 24-21 going into halftime. 

The Quakers were able to keep their spark and came out posting the first two points by Ashtyn Zeigler, 26-21 with an assist from Hinson. With help from Carleigh Perry, Courtney McMillian, Giannopoulou, Gauldin, and Hinson, Guilford was able to add 14 points to its lead by the end of the third while the Marlins added six, 40-27.

The fourth started off with a good free throw from the Marlins followed with a layup from Adaje Williams. By the middle of the fourth, the hosts were trailing behind the Quakers by 12 points, 46-34, which led to a 21-point difference at the end of the game. 

Guilford was able to take advantage on steals from VWU, 21-6. Both squads were equal with possession as the Quakers held the edge in rebounds, 46-39. 

The Quakers will host an ODAC matchup against Washington and Lee on Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m.
