Football Wraps Up Regular Season

The Guilford College football team played its season finale against Bridgewater College. Four early scores separated the Eagles from the Quakers as the visitors went on to win, 64-22.

Bridgewater received the opening kickoff and after a solid return, BC started at the 50-yard line. The Eagles quickly went to work and marched down the field to the Guilford 3. After a couple of rushing attempts, the visitors had a 4th-and-goal from the four but failed to score.

Guilford went three-and-out on its first offensive possession and punted the ball back to Bridgewater. Starting in Guilford territory (45), the Eagles used seven plays to cover the 45 yards in 2:51 and score the first touchdown to lead 7-0.

Both teams exchanged punts as game entered the second quarter with score still at 7-0. Unfortunately, Bridgewater held the ball to start the second and scored just 56 seconds in to take a 14-0 edge.

Later in the second, the Eagles received a punt a returned it 40 yards for the score. On the ensuing kickoff, the ball seemed to bounce in the endzone and kicked back into the play where BC recovered the live ball at the Guilford two. On the next play, the Eagles were in the endzone and converted a two-point conversion to lead 29-0 with 9:26 remaining in the first half.

After interceptions by both defenses, Guilford took over at its own 22. Bailey Baker then connected with Kyle Lovett for gains of 11 and 17 yards. After a couple of Bridgewater penalties and passes of 10 and 14 yards to Eric Mays, the Quakers were on the BC 26. The very next play, Baker found Tre Alexander in the right corner of the endzone for a touchdown. With 2:53 on the clock, Guilford trailed 29-7.

The very next kickoff, the Eagles took the ball at the 10 and returned it 90 yards for a score. On the Quakers next possession, Baker found Alexander for 18 yards before hitting Mays over the middle for a 50-yard score. The extra point was good as the visitors led 36-14. The score remained this way until the half.

In the second half, Bridgewater scored 28-unanswered points to led 64-14. The final GC score came on a 62-yard pass from Teddy Gassert to Tre Alexander. Gassert then found Mays for the two-point conversion to give us the final score of 64-22.

Mays finished the day with seven receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown while Alexander caught three passes with two of them for scores for 106 yards.

Guilford finishes the season with a 2-8 record while going 1-6 in conference play.
