GC Wins Tournament Opener

Guilford's men's basketball squad opened up the Marietta Shrine Tournament against La Roche University. They came out victorious, winning 83-75 as Tyler Dearman and Rob Littlejohn led the with 23 points each. 

Guilford found itself up early, 9-2. La Roche came back within a couple of possessions but the Quakers managed to hold off their offense by keeping the lead. This trend continued throughout the first half, by going up a few baskets and La Roche managing to close the deficit.

The largest lead the Quakers had was seven when the score was 20-13. La Roche was able to gain the lead late in the half with 1:14 remaining, 33-32. Littlejohn was able to score on a fast break to take the lead going into the half. 

The Redhawks were able to turn momentum at the start of the second half, finding themselves up five. The Quakers and La Roche traded buckets until the 13th minute when the Guilford took the lead 64-63. From this point Guilford was able to continue with the momentum on its side, not giving up the lead for the rest of the half. Littlejohn and Burch were able to lock down the win for the Quakers. 

Guilford outshot their opponents, shooting 43.9% from the field, 39.3% from three, and 82.4% from the line. The bench shined in the opening game of the tournament scoring 30 total points. 

The Quakers will take on the winner of Wisconsin-La Crosse and hosts Marietta in the championship game on Saturday, November 12. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
