The Guilford College women's rugby team hosted Elon University in two sevens. The Quakers won both games, 19-12 and 15-14.
Game 1: Guilford 19, Elon 12
In the opening game, Elon took the opening kick and wasted little time and scored the first try and conversion for the 7-0 lead. The Quakers responded as
Portia Star Jones scored and completed the conversion to even the score at seven.
Later in the first half, Jones added another try to take a 12-7 lead. The Phoenix evened the game with a try as the game went to half.
Guilford scored the lone try from
Savannah Marchinsky. Jones made the conversion to give GC the 19-12 win.
Game 2: Guilford 15, Elon 14
Elon captured the early lead with a try and conversion. Jones scored the only try for the Quakers in the half but the team was unable to make the conversion.
Up 7-5 after the half, the Phoenix increased their lead to nine (14-5). Marchinsky cut the deficit with a try but the clock was working against GC.Â
After getting the ball back, the Quakers moved the ball down the pitch as Jones scored with just a few seconds left in the game to secure the one-point victory (15-14).
Guilford travels to Newberry College on Saturday, October 15. First game is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
