The Guilford College women's basketball team traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia to battle the Hornets on Saturday afternoon. While both teams were neck and neck, the Hornets defeated the Quakers in overtime with a score of 71-70.
To open the first period, Lindsay Gauldin was able to put Guilford (5-11, 3-8) in the lead with a three pointer assisted by Caroline Wilkerson. Going back and forth with scoring, the Quakers kept the lead throughout the quarter ending in a 10-point lead (22-12).Â
Two minutes into the second quarter, the score remained the same until Lynchburg (10-7, 6-4) made two free throws at 8:16 followed by two layups and a free throw cut the deficit to 22-19. Towards the middle of the period, the Hornets were able to close the gap and eventually caught up to the Quakers, down by one point (37-36) at the half.
In the third quarter, Guilford picked up the offensive scoring. Ashtyn Zeigler opened up with a three-pointer assisted by Wilkerson followed by another three by Wilkerson. Although the Quakers kept the lead the whole game, Lynchburg was right behind them. GC was able to put up 16 total points in the third while Lynchburg put up 15 as it was 53-51 going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Lynchburg started the fourth by tying the game at 53. Guilford broke the tie with a three and a free throw but the hosts were staying close. The Hornets took the lead for the first time in the game, 58-57, at 6:44. Back-and-forth scoring from both teams till Gauldin made a three that tied the game (66-66) and sent it to overtime.
The Quakers took the first lead with free throws made by Gauldin. Lynchburg made a three quickly after to jump ahead 69-68 with 1:51 on the clock. The Quakers looked for an answer and it came off the hand of Zeigler to go back in front, 70-69.
The Hornets were inbounding the ball with 1.7 seconds on the clock. A pass into the paint found Erin Green. Green turned around and made a floater as time expired to give Lynchburg the win, 71-70.
Gauldin paced the Quakers offense with 25 points while also corralling seven rebounds. Wilkerson added 15 points while Zeigler finished the night 11 points.
Turnovers haunted both teams as Guilford committed 19 compared to 16 for Lynchburg. Free throws proved vital as the Quakers went 6-14 (42.9%) while the Hornets were 13-19 (68.4%) from the stripe.
Guilford welcomes Ferrum to Jack Jensen Court on Wednesday, February 2 with a start time at 7:00 p.m.
